Lewes Community Kitchen listings

In Jan 2012, we took on a semi-derelict industrial unit on the riverside in Lewes East Sussex. With the help of a few friends and lots of faith and hard work, we have created a permanent base for Community Chef in the form of Lewes Community Kitchen. We run in house cookery and bakery classes, workshops, cookery leader training and food hygiene training for private individuals, community and commercial organisations. Our event catering operations are now based here as is the Lewes Bread Club and Micro Bakery which produces high quality, community supported Real Bread. We host lunch and supper clubs, food and film nights and local community events. We also rent the kitchen out to local food projects as well as cooks and artisan bakers who need occasional use of a commercial kitchen. “Be Rhythm! Be Happy!”

For beginners and early improvers, adults and teenagers 12 yrs+.

We will play the West-African djembe (hand drum) and dunun (stick bass drum), study technique, sound and rhythm fundamentals, call and response, and learn parts for ensemble play of rhythms from West-African traditions.

Aim of this course is to empower students to enjoy the beauty and culture of African rhythm and encourage further study and practice.

Instruments are provided, or bring your own. Drum hire £1 per class.

Tutor Thomas Christen: “With a lifelong fascination for rhythm I have been practicing and teaching music for over 35 years. This has led me into many different rhythmic territories all across the globe.
It is the unique sound of the instruments in the West-African Djembe ensemble and the beautiful melodies created from the interaction of hand and stick/bass drums that touches, inspires and energizes me. The overwhelming joy one senses, when a rhythm flows, is a wonderful collective reward – an experience, I would like to share in my work.”
